Congratulations on receiving an offer to study at La Trobe Melbourne.

Step 1: Accepting your Letter of Offer

When we receive your application form we will send you an Offer and Acceptance Letter. You must sign and return this form along with payment.

Step 2: Applying for a Student Visa

Please note: if you cannot start your course on time, please contact La Trobe Melbourne and ask to delay your start date.

Step 3: Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

On a student visa, the Australian Government requires you to hold Overseas Student Health Cover throughout your student visa. OSHC will pay for medical and hospital care, for some prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport. It does not cover any illness or disability you had before you came to Australia and it does not cover dental, optical or other ancillary services. Remember to bring your medical and optical prescriptions with you.

Step 4: Organise your accommodation

Step 5: Book your Airport Pickup Service

Please arrive at least 7 days before Orientation and Enrolment to have time to settle in and find your way around Melbourne. Please let us know if you want someone to meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation.

Click here to download the Airport Pickup Request Form. You must submit this form at least 1 week before you arrive and keep a copy for your reference. We will send you a confirmation email, when your pickup is booked.

When you arrive at Melbourne Airport:

  • STEP 1: After Customs, go through the sliding door and turn right.
  • STEP 2: Walk to the Group Tours desk and turn right.
  • STEP 3: Look for the red and white sign, "Meeting Point".
  • STEP 4: Look for the La Trobe Melbourne representative, holding a sign "TOGOTO AUSTRALIA. OVERSEAS STUDENTS".

If you cannot find the TOGOTO representative, go to the Travellers' Information Desk and ask for help or telephone driver Ellen on 0409 503 646. Please wait for the driver to arrive.

Step 6: Find out more about living in Melbourne


Melbourne has four different seasons, hot in summer and cool in winter. You need to have a range of clothing - warm clothes and a coat for winter and light clothes for summer.


Australia uses the Australian dollar (A$ or AUD) and cents (100 cents = $1.00).

Cost of Living

Cost of living depends on your lifestyle but a single international student requires approximately $18,000 to $21,500 per year to live in Melbourne. This does not include your airfare.

The first few weeks are expensive. You may need temporary accommodation, a bond for renting a house, money for books, furnishings.


Banks are generally open Monday to Thursday, 9.30 am - 4.00 pm and Friday 9.30 am - 5.00 pm. Some banks are open on Saturday mornings. If you want to open a bank account, you need to take some identification documents - your passport, credit card, drivers licence (if you have one), student ID card.

Tax File Number

If you want to work in Australia, you need to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN). If you don't have a TFN, you will be taxed at a high rate, see

Public Transport

Melbourne's public transport system operates tram, train and bus services, generally 5 am - 12 midnight Monday to Saturday, and 8 am - 11 pm on Sundays and public holidays.
